The Bangkok subway, or MRT in Bangkok as it is better known was completed in 2005 and has also proved to be a God send. The Bangkok subway system is cool, clean and efficient and is certainly our prefered method of transportation.
Although this method of getting around Bangkok is cool and simple, it suffers, for now, from having few stations and it doesn't cover very much of Bangkok. For now, it goes from Hualompong ( the central train station ) to Bangsue
The Bangkok subway is based on a single line with no changes, although there are three points at which you can change over to the Bangkok skytrain system, but you will have to buy a separate ticket for each part of the journey.
You can change to the Bangkok Skytrain ( BTS ) at the following stations:
- Chatuchak Park / MoChit
- Sukhumvit
- Saladaeng / Silom.
Using the Bangkok Underground ticketing system:
When you enter the underground, you have the option of buying your ticket from the ticket booth, or buy using the touch screen machines.
Buying from the machine
The machines are basically computer screens that can be activated by touch and so the first thing to do is change the language. Tap the screen so that the language shows English and then tap the destination.
Once your destination has been chosen, the required fare is shown and you can either place the correct amount of money in the slot, or you can add more than is necessary and receive some change. Coins and notes are accepted and the system works quite well.
You will then be issued with a black, round, plastic, coin sized, token which will drop into the change tray below the monitor.

Buying from the ticket booth.
If the is not a queue at the booth, you can purchase your token or travel cards there.
Just go up to the booth, state your destination and pass them money. They will pass you change and a token.
If you want a travel card, you need to tell them what type of card you want. REMEMBER, the card will cost you 50 Baht as a deposit, and so if you want 200 Baht's worth of travel, you'll pay 250 Baht. The deposit money is refundable when you had back the ticket.
With your token / ticket in hand, proceed to the entry barriers / gates and tap your token or ticket against the pad to the right of the entrance of the gate you have chosen. You must touch the pad with the token / ticket and this will open the gate for you.
At your destination, if you have a token, you must place the token into the slot at the gate and this will open the gates for you. All tokens are recycled.
If you have a ticket, tap the ticket on the pad and you will be let through. You can alos see how much is left on the card via the small monitor at the gates.
