Bangkok's Night Bazaar or night market is the central Bangkok's version of Chatuchak market, with pretty much the same kind of items on sale that most tourists might be interested in.

Suan-Lum, as the Night Bazaar is known to the Thais, is a large collection of stalls selling all manner of house-hold goods, clothing, art, shoes, bags, jewelry and antiques. Bangkok and Thailand has many markets and shopping centers where you can buy all these things, but Bangkok's night market or night bazaar has shops and stalls that might offer something you can't get elsewhere in Bangkok or Thailand for that matter. Bangkok markets and stalls give you the opportunity to bargain too.

The stalls are all part of a maze of isles divided into sections depicting the type of items you can expect to find.

It is possible to go to one of the maps scattered around the bazaar and determine which section you want to get to but it's suggested that you take a few hours to roam around and take in all the various goods on offer as you're sure to find something that takes your fancy.

The Bangkok Night Bazaar is much smaller than Chatuchak and is less busy and certainly cooler due to the fact that it's at night but it can still get very hot and humid. However, there are plenty of counters where you can grab a cool drink and if that's not enough, there is a section of good quality restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat and watch what is happening around you.

One of these restaurants is Joe Louis Theatre which is shown above. Joe Louis is a traditional Thai puppet show which involves the puppeteers dressing completely in black and operating the puppets with sticks instead of with strings. The puppeteers perform infront of a black back drop and so they are almost invisible. The puppets are fairly large and colourful and so after a few minutes it's easy to fade out the puppeteers and focus on the puppets.

However, once again, Thailand assumes that because you are not a Thai, you have money to burn and therefore they can double / triple the fee. We can just imagine Thais going to Disney World or Tower of London, or Sydney Opera house and being told that because they are Thai, they have to pay nearly three times more......ahem !

The Joe Louis restaurant gets very busy and you could end up waiting for 15 minutes or more for a table. The food is good but like the rest of the place, it is expensive with a lemon slush drink ( "manao ban" ) costing 100 Baht. The price should be more like 40 - 50 Baht.

If you are looking for some live entertainment then there is a large section of this night bazaar in Bangkok that is set up for live concerts which are free. The idea is that the seating area is actually an eating area / beer garden and surrounding the area are all the food stalls or beer bars.

In the photo above right, we noticed signs stating "no bargaining" or "please don't bargain". Ignore these signs and don't be put off by these stalls. If you want something and think it's a little expensive then bargain. If they moan about it, walk away and deal with someone who wants your money.
